Panels & Boys' Room Details

Thanks for all of your comments on my window treatment dilemma! You all pretty much said the same thing, and I went for the panels with the chocolate trim. I'm happy with the way they turned out, and the rod hung extra high adds some height to my 8 foot ceilings.


I used these items to create the trim on the IKEA drapes.

No Sewing! Seriously so easy!

Now onto the details of the room..

The bunk beds are the PB Kendall bunks that we got at Down East. I found one of the striped duvets as well as 9 yards of the same striped fabric there for $70. Pretty good deal. I sewed another duvet, as well as the blue euro shams, and the dog silhouette pillows, love those! My sister-in-law and mother-in-law made the quilts with the boys' initials on them.

My most favorite picture of Will is this one by his bed, he's a sweet 9 months old, oh that face is too cute! I paired it with a set of his hand prints (great inexpensive art!).

The seagrass rug was $24.99 at TJ Maxx! My sister-in-law always says "You get the max for the minimum at TJ's" True, true!
And the personalized Land of Nod bean bags are so great for reading or playing DS in.

Love this mustard colored dresser that Trevor's mom spotted at the junk store. Look at those legs!! Originally I was going to re-finish it but I love the mustard against the blue walls, and the crackle in the paint is awesome!

I'm sure you're tired of seeing this gallery wall so click here for the details. But it really is my favorite part of the room:) I adored the little dog lamp on the dresser for quite awhile, love the way it ties in the dog silhouettes. I added a little trim to a new shade to just kind of finish it off.

This little bench is also a junk store find for $9. I re-stained it and added some left over stripe fabric to it. Pretty sweet.

I almost forgot...paint is Ralph Lauren Canyon Blue. Trim is Behr Swiss Coffee (if you are looking for a good white, this one is awesome! This is the third house I've used it in.

I'm happy with the end result, and so glad my boys have a put together room that they can call their own. Isn't it funny though, that sometimes by the time a project is complete, our tastes have changed a bit. If I could do it all over I would go a little different direction, but hey, I'm sure it will get re-done in a few years anyway. We'll enjoy it while we can:)

Coffee Table on the Cheap

I'm kind of digging the look of two cubes for a coffee table.

That being said, I keep thinking there has got to be a way to get that look for less.

I've thought about creating the same look with two IKEA Lack side tables. At $7.99 each, you really can't go wrong (the real question is, will they break if my boys sit on them while playing the Wii?).

I would love to paint them a fabulous, high gloss color and how fun would it be to add a faux bois finish to the top?! Look at these beautiful bedside tables.

Mom's Office Makeover/Guest Post!

I'm guest posting over at Lovely Happenings today, on 3 things that make me smile! Check out Megan's blog, this girl has an eye for all things stylish!

I wanted to share with you the waiting room in my mom's office that she and I decorated awhile ago, it was in desperate need of some help. I wish I had before pics because although it had good "bones" the furniture and decor was literally straight from my grandma's house. We kept the paint, crown molding and carpet. Here is the end result. (These pictures didn't turn out super great,I think it actually looks better in person)

My mom is a marriage and family therapist, so we wanted it to feel kind of "spa like" and relaxing while still being a waiting room. We used an olivey sage green, steel blue and a buttery cream, and paired it with dark wood. I love that mirror from Ballard Designs (when my mom gets tired of things she "gifts" them to me. I'll cross my fingers:).
She custom ordered the couch and chair at a local furniture store and found a lot of the accessories there as well. Don't be afraid when buying furniture to ask what their best price is, or find accessories you like in the store and see if they can cut you a deal if you buy those as well. It usually works to save you at least a little bit of money.

We found the art above the chairs at Shopko and the vases and tray on the console at TJ Maxx. Pier One also had some goodies that we displayed on the coffee and side tables.

I think my mom's waiting room turned out great. And I know her clients have appreciated a space that they can relax in. Mission accomplished!

Simple and Inexpensive

This entry way wall would be so simple and inexpensive to re-create.

Pick up a bunch of different sized frames at the thrift store and paint them all the same color. Find antlers or an animal head, there has got to be something like that at the thrift store, doesn't there? Paint it! Look how nice the antlers that Eddie and Jaithan spruced up turned out.

You could really put anything you love in one of the frames:)

This would be such a fun way to fill a wall behind a sofa or even by a staircase!

Stylish Coat Hooks

I've been brainstorming about how to put together my entry way, so that its functional but stylish. Really the most traffic in this space is from kids. Whether it be my boys coming and going, or their friends who are taking coats and shoes off and on. It got me thinking that I should possibly put some coat hooks in the entry (novel idea, right?).

I'm thinking more along the lines of fun but classy.

Window Treatment Dilemma

Will and Charlie's room has basically been "done" for about a year. Done, except for the windows.... I can't decide if I should do roman shades or panels.

I have been leaning towards roman shades because panels would be partially blocked by the bunk bed. But that window is really big, I've never personally seen a roman shade that large and I'm not sure if it would function properly.

Let's say I decide on a roman, should I do the stripe that is also on the duvet covers and bench? I like rooms that have a repeated statement fabric. Or do I go more neutral and simple with the light tan and add a chocolate brown stripe?


I want to use Jenny's roman shade tutorial from LGN, and I could do it for around $10 because I already own the fabric options. (They've been sitting, waiting for me to make a decision)

Or should I scrap the roman shades and just do the IKEA Lenda panels trimmed in the chocolate ribbon?

I would really appreciate any of your feedback or suggestions. So ready to be done with this room! :)

MPMK Guest Post: Steph's Favorite Kid's Space

Hello Cove Street readers! I'm Steph from Modern Parents Messy Kids and I'm delighted to be guest posting here today. I haven't had the chance to post much on total room design over at MPMK - I have visions of creating some fabulous design board posts but it just hasn't happened yet. In the meantime, please enjoy the eye candy that is this fabulous nursery.

I first spotted this space from Cape 27 over at Spearmint Baby and it's been popping up everywhere since then. Take a look at the pictures below and you'll see why. I'm not one that likes to O.D. on pink in a girl's room - too much of the stuff tends to give me a sugar headache. But here the use of grey with pink accents strikes the perfect balance between sweet and modern. There are also lots of little touches that make this room a chic space that will grow right along with it's inhabitant.

The thing that jumps right out at you is the gorgeous palette. The subtle grey walls are the perfect back drop to all the colorful-yet-serene pops of fabric. I love using fabric in lots of different ways around a nursery. Here a collection of framed swatches makes for a stunning focal point above the changing table.

In S's nursery I spelled out her name above the crib using homemade fabric decals. The process couldn't be more simple - just apply fabric stiffner, trace and cut out the letters, and iron them onto the wall. That's right, I said iron them directly onto the wall. They will stay up forever without causing any permanent damage (unless you blister the paint by setting the iron too hot - not that I did that).

The space also does a great job of juxtaposing lots of softer elements with a few edgier pieces like this zinc "Z".

Finally, I love me some storage containers and this room has them in spades. Again the materials range from the traditional (a wicker basket) to the unconventional (a galvanized tub from Lowes).
