How Do You Mess Up Spray Paint?

This weekend I've been working on painting a chest of drawers for my entry. I love this piece, my mother-in-law bought it for me 7 years ago, and I think its pretty timeless. It was painted a rustic black and needed a little update. I spray painted two coats of black lacquer, the problem...after two coats its still patchy and a little drippy. I kept the spray paint moving while I was doing it and held the can 10-12" from the furniture. I'm not sure what I did wrong. Any ideas?

(sorry, this picture is a little cluttered)

Aargh! A little frustrated over here. Seriously, how did I mess this up?

On a positive note, I wanted to show you the couch I'm saving up forTotally cute, yes?:)

  1. I love the sofa! Love the color and love the style. I'm wondering with the spray paint, do you think it would've helped to prime the chest of drawers? I'm not an expert but I'm just thinking if the existing finish had a top coat it might've made it hard to put something right on top of it. I actually messed up spray painting a picture frame last week so don't feel bad!
